Toyota Ft-86 Sports Cars

Toyota Ft 86 Concept Front Three Quarter

Toyota isn't exactly well known for making sexy motors. Green cars, yes. Nice little city runarounds, yes. But über-hot cars that make your heart pound? That's a definite no! Well, this may all be set to change with the introduction of the FT-86 concept car at this month's Toyko Motor Show – a car that looks like it could give Nissan's GT-R and 370Z coupé a run for their money.

Down at Toyota HQ, the clever designers – who’ve brought us the likes of the iQ and the new Prius – have been developing a vehicle that ticks all of the right sports car boxes – the result being the slicker-than-slick FT-86.

When designing the sports car, Toyota’s designers are claimed to have taken into consideration all that a classic sports car should be, so FT-86 comes with features such as a low centre of gravity, lightweight construction and compact dimensions.

Under the five-seater's hood there’s a 2.0-litre boxer engine that’s claimed to be "strong on both performance and environmental quality" – though cheeky Toyota hasn't given us any performance stats so we can’t make up our own minds about whether it really delivers on both fronts.

It's a BMW in every sense, especially its 4.8-second 0-to-60 miles per hour acceleration, yet it gets P90047168_highRes 62.6 miles a gallon.

BMW is starting to show off the Vision concept with a plug-in hybrid with electric motors and three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The midengine sports car concept, to be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is part BMW's latest attempt to show just how environmentally sensitive it can be.

"Through this unique balance of driving pleasure and fuel efficiency, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car clearly demonstrates the potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, which makes its world debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and BMW ActiveHybrid 7 production models," BMW says.

In a 220-volt outlet, the Vision takes less than three hours to recharge, BMW says.
